Tummy Tuck Q & A

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat. It can also restore separated or weakened abdominal muscles. With a tummy tuck, you’ll have a smoother, firmer, flatter waistline once you've healed from the procedure.

Causes that make you a good candidate for the procedure include the following:

  • Aging
  • Heredity
  • Recent weight loss
  • Past pregnancy
  • Diastasis recti
  • Prior Surgery

When a healthy diet and exercise have helped you achieve your ideal weight, but your tummy isn’t as flat as you’d like, speak with Dr. Adesomo to see if you’re a perfect candidate for a tummy tuck.

What should I expect during a tummy tuck?

You'll be asleep during your entire procedure so that you won't feel anything during your tummy tuck. Before your operation, an anesthesiologist, who works with Dr. Adesomo, gives you intravenous sedation.

Dr. Adesomo then makes an incision between your pubic hairline and belly button. The length and shape of the incision can vary.

He then lifts your abdominal skin and repairs the abdominal muscles underneath. He pulls down the upper abdominal skin, removes any excess skin, sutures the remaining skin to secure it, and makes a new belly button for you.

Dr. Adesomo might insert tiny tubes in your lower abdomen so fluid can drain during healing.

What should I expect during tummy tuck recovery?

Your healing process begins once you wake up from your surgery. Dr. Adesomo provides dressings and bandages to keep the incision site clean. He also gives you a compression garment to wrap around your abdomen during recovery.

You’ll require plenty of rest and may need medications to help manage pain. Dr. Adesomo might recommend you walk in a hunched-over position early on during your recovery process. Plan to have a  family member or friend help care for you when you arrive home after surgery.

Am I a good candidate for a tummy tuck procedure?

A tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight loss if you carry excess weight. You must achieve your goal weight before your procedure. Dr. Adesomo may recommend a tummy tuck if you:

  • Don't smoke
  • Are in good health
  • Have reached a healthy body weight
  • Are bothered by your stomach's appearance

While a tummy tuck can flatten and smooth your midsection, it doesn’t fix stretch marks unless they are on the skin removed during your procedure.

If you’ve reached your target weight and your stomach protrudes or have loose, saggy skin, call Dr. Adesomo to discover how a tummy tuck can change your life. Schedule a consultation at Houston Women’s Cosmetics by phone or online today.
