What is prenatal care?

Prenatal care is medical care you receive when you’re pregnant. It’s a good idea to also see Dr. Adesomo if you’re thinking about becoming pregnant, to go over steps you can take ahead of time to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

Prenatal care helps:

  • Keep you and the baby healthy during pregnancy
  • Decrease the risk of low birth weight
  • Increase the chance your baby will survive
  • Spot early signs of health problems

Some things you can do before becoming pregnant to increase your chance of a healthy pregnancy include taking prenatal vitamins, avoid drinking and smoking, controlling medical conditions, getting plenty of sleep, and avoiding high-mercury fish.

Dr. Adesomo provides compassionate, patient-centered care to ensure you feel right at home during each prenatal appointment. He makes sure you and your baby are healthy before and during pregnancy and during and after delivery.

How often should I see a doctor during pregnancy?

As a general rule, you should come to Houston Women’s Cosmetics for prenatal appointments:

  • About one time monthly during weeks 4-28
  • Twice a month during weeks 28-36
  • Each week during weeks 36 through delivery

Dr. Adesomo lets you know how often to come in for prenatal appointments, as this number varies from patient to patient. If you’re older than 35 or have a high-risk pregnancy, you may require more frequent prenatal appointments.

What should I expect during prenatal appointments?

Each prenatal appointment is different depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy, your pregnancy risk level, and whether or not you have any health conditions. During your first prenatal visit, Dr. Adesomo may:

  • Go over your health history
  • Complete a physical exam, including a pelvic exam
  • Order blood work
  • Check your height, weight, and blood pressure
  • Estimate your due date
  • Go over any questions you may have

During subsequent prenatal appointments, Dr. Adesomo or another team member at Houston Women’s Cosmetics check your blood pressure and weight, measures your abdomen, and checks your baby’s heart rate.

You may also complete routine tests to check for certain diseases and receive a sonogram to ensure your baby is growing and developing properly.

Houston Women’s Cosmetics always appreciates feedback from our valued patients.
