What is a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat, and restores separated or weak abdominal muscles. After Dr. Adesomo completes a tummy tuck and you’ve healed from the procedure, you’ll have a smoother, firmer, flatter waistline.
If you’re within a healthy weight range, causes of abdominal muscle separation and loose, saggy skin that makes you a good candidate for a tummy tuck include:
- Prior surgery
- Recent weight loss
- Past pregnancy
- Diastasis recti
When diet and exercise have helped you reach your goal weight but your tummy isn’t as flat as you’d like, talk with Dr. Adesomo to find out if you’re a good candidate for an abdominoplasty.
What should I expect during a tummy tuck?
Before your tummy tuck, an anesthesiologist who works with Dr. Adesomo administers intravenous sedation, so you’ll be asleep and won’t feel anything during the procedure.
Dr. Adesomo then makes an incision in the area between your belly button and pubic hairline. The length and shape of the incision vary depending on how extensive your surgery is.
He then lifts up your abdominal skin and repairs abdominal muscles underneath. He pulls down the upper abdominal skin, cuts away excess skin, places sutures on the remaining skin to secure it in place, and creates a new belly button for you. He may place small tubes in your lower abdomen so fluid can drain during the healing process.
What should I expect during recovery?
Your recovery process begins once you wake up from your surgery. Dr. Adesomo gives you bandages and dressings to keep the incision site clean, and a compression garment to wear around your abdomen during healing.
You’ll need plenty of rest and may require medications to manage pain. Dr. Adesomo may recommend you walk in a hunched over position early on during the healing process. Plan to have a friend or family member help care for you when you first arrive at home after surgery.
Am I a good candidate?
It is not a substitution for weight loss if you’re overweight. Plan to reach your goal weight before surgery. Dr. Adesomo may recommend a tummy tuck if you:
- Are in good health
- Have reached a healthy body weight
- Don’t smoke
- Are bothered by the appearance of your stomach
While a tummy tuck smooths and flattens your midsection, it doesn’t correct stretch marks unless the marks are located on skin that gets removed during surgery.
If you’ve reached your goal weight and your stomach still protrudes or you have loose saggy skin, call Dr. Adesomo for a consultation to learn more about how a tummy tuck can change your life.
