Birth Control Q&A

What are my choices?

Never before have women had so many choices when it comes to family planning. There is a birth control method for every set of needs.

Some contraception options rely on hormones to prevent pregnancy. These include:

  • Birth control pills
  • Birth control patches
  • Implants (Nexplanon)
  • Rings or patches
  • Some IUDs

Other options rely on non-hormonal tools to prevent pregnancy. These include:

  • Condoms (male and female)
  • Spermicide
  • Birth control sponges
  • Cervical caps
  • Diaphragms

Fertility awareness, also called the rhythm method, involves attempting to time your fertility cycle to avoid having sex on fertile days. This method has a low success rate at preventing unwanted pregnancy and is not a reliable form of birth control.

How do I get a birth control prescription?

If you’d like to try birth control pills, your practitioner at Suburban Women’s Clinic can write you a prescription during your follow-up visit. Just mention your interest when booking your visit or when you arrive at the office.

If you’re interested in trying one of the other birth control methods mentioned above, your physician can discuss the availability of these methods and whether you need to schedule an appointment with your routine OB/GYN to move forward.

Several types of birth are available over the counter with no prescription needed. You should also know that hormonal birth control options do nothing to protect against STDs, so having a barrier method like condoms on hand is a critical part of staying healthy.

Houston Women’s Cosmetics always appreciates feedback from our valued patients.
